The Farm Story

In the 1960's, Steve Harvey, a retired forestry professional and his wife, Vassa, known county-wide for her home-baked cookies, planted a Christmas tree on the Irle family farm, just east of Sumner, in the Puyallup Valley. The Harveys helped start a trend toward friendly family operated small tree farms. From berries, bulbs, rhubarb, fruit, cows, and school teaching, the Irle family now has the 5th generation working in the field as well as in the classroom. The farm includes a variety of trees: Grand Fir, Turkish (Nordman) Fir, Douglas Fir (the All American favorite), Frasier Fir, Scotch Pine, and Colorado Blue Spruce trees.

Harveys Harvest includes over 8 acres of cultivated land which includes thousands of trees. The front field, on 166th Ave E, boasts the entire variety of trees that grow on our farm. How many varieties do we have?

The Turkish (Nordman) Fir is similar in profile to the Noble. The Turkish has a strong horizontal limb, somewhat longer needles and a brighter green, shiny appearance. We have many beautiful Turkish Firs greeting you when you arrive at Harveys Harvest.

Noble Firs: On our farm the dream tree is the Noble Fir. Unfortunately it remains mostly a dream. The Turkish Fir has become our premier tree and many people prefer it to the Noble because it stays fresh longer.

We have many Grand Firs. The Grand Fir is our favorite natural tree. Almost entirely hand pruned the Grands have a nice layered look and the best evergreen aroma on the farm.

Douglas Firs are an American classic. We have more Douglas Fir than any other tree in our field. Our Douglas Fir are characterized by their diversity. We now have over one thousand Douglas Fir that have been cultured. Most of our Douglas Fir are about six feet and have been sheared. We have more than 20 Douglas Firs over 10 feet tall and one Steve Harvey original at 46 feet.

Colorado Blue Spruce have grown up! After 8 years in the making to get the now six foot trees look great! We have a selection of about 30 trees that should find a happy home this year. The prickly needles act as a great deterent to pets on the prowl for early Christmas presents!

True to their heritage, our Scotch Pines, wee Laddies and Lassies, are frugally priced. Just $30.00 a tree for that special scent and starburst shape. The selection is large(as in many over 10') and more than 200 to choose from make this tree a specialty.

For pictures and descriptions of tree varieties visit http://nwtrees.com/treegallery.htm. The pictures at this site are not representative of the way we culture most of our trees. The only variety that we regularly shear are Douglas Fir. Our Grand Firs, Scotch Pine, and Turkish Fir are almost exclusively hand pruned.

Enjoy the comfort of our fire pit and picnic area as well as free hot beverages and candy canes for kids of all ages. For the nature lovers we have grassy isles and a couple of chairs back by Salmon Creek.

Remember, your most precious cargo are your friends and family!
